Homestead FL

A brand new local food festival launches tonight in the heart of historic Homestead. Called Homestead Al Gusto, the event is the brainchild of Adri Garcia, executive chef of Greenrocks Foods. She brings together a number of different elements of the local food scene to this free, family friendly fest.

Participating at the event: the Food Truck Invasion, local farmers and food artisans, a Children’s Corner presented by Atala Montessori School with lots of fun kid’s activities, live music, and a Chef’s tent where Chef Adri Garcia and friends will give cooking demos.

To add to the excitement, chefs from the Food Truck Invasion will compete for best in show in a Chef’s Challenge issued by local farmers in Homestead. (And farmers are a tough crowd to please!) The chefs will pick up a basket of local produce containing in season vegetables and herbs from Redland, and make a dish using their particular style of cooking. The results will be judged and a prize will be awarded.

It’s time to plant your fall vegetable garden! Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is once again holding its annual Edible Garden Festival this weekend, October 22 and 23, from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.  The gardening celebration will have ongoing lectures, cooking and gardening demonstrations, free yoga class in the mornings, a beer garden (it is October after all), a plant sale and a farmer’s market.

Baby tomato seedlings. Picture taken about 4 weeks ago. Plants for sale are much larger!

Bee Heaven Farm will be there with hundreds of heirloom tomato seedlings and dozens of varieties to choose from — small cherry and pear tomatoes, plum and paste varieties, and large beefsteaks. Heirloom tomatoes come in a rainbow of colors — yellow, orange, red, purplish black (those have the best flavor!), brownish red, pale pink, and even thaose that stay green when ripe. Heirloom tomatoes have some of the most creative names — Green Gage, Brown Berry, Sun Gold, Lollipop, Tommy Toe, Matt’s Wild Cherry (an Everglades tomato), Podland Pink, Brandywine, Black Krim, Georgia Streak, Tigerella, Homestead 24, Taxi, Black Plum, Cream Sausage, Speckled Roman, Red Zebra, Green Zebra — and that’s just a few of the kinds that Bee Heaven Farm will have at the Festival. It’s easy to fill your garden with tomato plants. Buy 5 and get one free. Buy 15 and get 5 free.

Have you signed up for any of the sessions scheduled before the Community Food Summit? There’s plenty to choose from. The one that caught my eye is the Regenerative Farm Tour on Sunday Oct. 2. Regenerating is a good thing to do on a weekend, to clear out big city craziness at various farms, big and small, both urban and rural.

Tour guide Corinna Moebius will visit The Farm at Verde Gardens, Frank Macaluso’s Edible Yard, Yve Rose’s Backyard Food Forest, and Muriel’s Little River Market Garden. The tour runs from 9 am to 3 pm and costs $45.

Included is a stop at Possum Trot Tropical Fruit Nursery, where Robert Barnum, the Cantankerous Chef, will prepare a delicious vegetarian lunch. He’s using as much farm raised and local food as possible. The menu includes:

  • drink made with cas guava
  • vegetable casserole with okra, cabbage, squash, zucchini, tomato sauce (made from Teena’s Pride heirloom tomatoes), betel leaf, topped with Hani’s organic goat cheese
  • fresh fruit platter including monstera, jakfruit and carambola
  • Sem Chi organic rice (grown in Belle Glade FL)
  • carambola pie
  • homemade tropical fruit wine (optional)

Register here for the tour and lunch.

The new schedule for the next Dinner in Paradise has been released. Dinners are very popular and do sell out quickly, so don’t wait to buy your tickets…

Join us for another stellar season with Miami’s best chefs preparing a delicious five course meal made with local organic products and paired with fine wines. The magic and charm of our lush edible landscape coupled with the finest chefs creates a uniquely intimate dining experience under the stars. Each year, we donate proceeds to a local charity or organization philosophically in line with our vision of sustainable, healing, and healthy organic food. This year we are sponsoring Youth L.E.A.D., Slow Food Miami, and Troy Community Academy.

Youth L.E.A.D seeks to educate and empower young people to adopt healthy, sustainable behaviors and advocate for food & environmental justice in their schools and communities.  Slow Food Miami is an all volunteer run organization that works to implement local school and community gardens. Troy Academy Community serves a total of 60 youths between the ages of 13 and 18 who are failing in traditional school settings and are involved in the juvenile justice system. They give hands on learning approaches to provide positive alternatives and futures for at risk youth.

Guests arrive at 5:00pm for cocktail reception and farm tour, followed by dinner at 6:00pm. (Dinners starting March 11 and after: cocktail reception at 6:00pm and dinner at 7:00pm)

Each dinner is $165.00 per person + tax and processing. Reservations are required. Make reservations and pay online at the Paradise Farms website.
